SECOND CHANCE STORIES / HAPPY TAILS

Hutch's Third Chance at Love

Twice, Hutch lost the people he loved. But his story reminds us that it's never too late for another chance at love.

Hutch a-Roo Trinity (formerly Fudge) found his forever home in August 2026.

Twice, Hutch lost the people who loved him. But somehow, he never lost his ability to love again.

Some animals come to Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter needing a first chance at finding a family. Others, like Fudge, arrive having already known what it means to be loved—and what it means to lose that love.

The gentle, 11-year-old cat first came to HMAS in March 2024 after his owner passed away. He was adopted into another loving home, only to experience the same heartbreaking loss when his second owner also passed away.

In April 2026, Fudge returned to the shelter once more.

Through no fault of his own, he had lost two homes and two people who cared for him. Yet despite everything he'd experienced, Fudge remained affectionate and trusting, always ready with a purr, a snuggle, and a welcoming lap.

He simply needed someone willing to give a senior cat another chance.

A Connection That Was Meant to Be

Brad and Melissa hadn't been in a hurry to adopt another cat. Their previous feline companion had lived to be 21, and after losing him, they'd needed time before considering another.

When they finally felt ready, Brad began casually searching online for adoptable cats in Minnesota.

Within hours, he came across Fudge's photograph on the Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter website.

The photo caught his attention. But it was Fudge's story that captured his heart.

As Brad and Melissa read about the losses Fudge had experienced, they felt an immediate connection. Having cared for an elderly cat before, they weren't intimidated by his age or ongoing health needs. They saw a loving companion who had been dealt some unfortunate circumstances—and who deserved another chance at happiness.

Lisa, an HMAS volunteer, helped them learn more about Fudge's personality and history. The more they learned, the more certain they became.

Brad even took an extra day off work so they could meet him sooner.

And when they arrived at the shelter, Fudge seemed to know exactly what to do.

Brad sat down beside him, and Fudge climbed directly into his lap. When Melissa sat down, Fudge did the same with her, purring and rubbing against them.

"It was love at first sight," they recalled. There was no turning back.

A New Name for a New Chapter

In August 2026, Fudge went home with Brad and Melissa, beginning a new chapter with a name full of meaning: Hutch a-Roo Trinity.

Every part of his name honors something special about his journey.

Hutch is a tribute to Hutchinson, the community where he was cared for until his new family found him.

Roo reflects his sweet, snuggly personality—the way he loves to curl up close and feel safe with the people he trusts.

And Trinity represents the three chapters of his life. It honors the two families who loved him before and celebrates the third family now carrying that love forward.

For Brad and Melissa, his new name isn't about forgetting the past. It's about remembering the love that came before while giving Hutch the happy future he deserves.

Settling Into His Forever Home

The hour-and-a-half drive home wasn't Hutch's favorite experience. But once he arrived, it didn't take long for his personality to emerge.

Brad and Melissa had expected that introducing him to their four-year-old Golden Retriever, Opal, might take a couple of weeks.

Hutch had other plans. Within two nights, he was exploring most of the house. Just a few nights later, he had the run of the place.

After a few initial hisses and a swat, Hutch and Opal settled into a comfortable arrangement. They aren't necessarily inseparable, but they're happy to share their home—and sometimes even the family bed.

Hutch has discovered plenty of favorite resting places, especially an antique rocking chair on the porch. He enjoys snuggling, occasionally curls up beside Brad or Melissa on the couch, and likes being wherever his people are.

And although he's 11 years old, he still has plenty of playful energy.

Perhaps most rewarding of all, Brad and Melissa have begun to see a little more of his “sassy” side.

For them, that emerging spunk is the greatest compliment. It means Hutch feels comfortable enough to let his true personality shine.

It's Never Too Late for Love

Brad and Melissa hope Hutch's story encourages others to consider adopting senior animals.

They know firsthand that age doesn't determine how much love an animal has to give.

"You never know just by a number how much joy an animal can bring your family," they shared.

Their previous cat lived to be 21, and they understand that adopting a younger animal doesn't guarantee more years together. What matters is the love and companionship shared along the way.

Despite his age and health condition, Hutch is active, playful, affectionate, and full of personality.

For a cat who has experienced so much loss, he has an extraordinary capacity to love.

And for Brad and Melissa, welcoming Hutch isn't simply about providing him a home. They feel honored to become the next chapter in his story.

Fudge's first two families loved him. That love will always be part of his history.

Now, as Hutch a-Roo Trinity, he's surrounded by love once again.

His third chapter has begun. And this time, he's home.
