SECOND CHANCE STORIES / HAPPY TAILS
Tank: His Second Chance Was Meant to Be.
Sometimes, the best things in life are the ones you never planned.

Vicki and Jeff weren't looking to adopt a dog. In fact, bringing another pet into their home wasn't even on their radar.
But one day, while scrolling through Facebook, Vicki came across a post from Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter about a dog named Tank.
The couple lived in St. Francis, nearly two hours from the shelter in Hutchinson. Vicki didn't follow HMAS on Facebook and had never visited its page. Somehow, Tank's story appeared in her feed.
The post described a dog who had spent months at the shelter, learning to trust people and waiting for someone to give him a chance. As Vicki read, she began to cry.
Something about Tank stayed with her.
She turned to her husband Jeff and asked if they should find out whether he was still available.
They decided to make the trip.
The Moment Everything Changed
When Vicki and Jeff arrived at HMAS, Tank was outside with a volunteer. Jeff sat down on a small step nearby.
Tank walked straight over and rested his head on Jeff's shoulder. That was all it took.
"I was like, we're done. We're taking this dog home," Vicki recalled.
For a dog who had spent months waiting for a family, it was a simple but extraordinary moment of connection.
And from that day forward, Tank seemed to know exactly where he belonged.
From Waiting to Thriving
Tank's journey hadn't been easy. Before arriving at HMAS, he had reportedly spent much of his time confined to a kennel, with limited opportunities for exercise. When he entered the shelter, he weighed approximately 148 pounds.
By the time Vicki and Jeff adopted him in late April, he had lost about 20 pounds. But he still struggled with mobility, and his new veterinarian diagnosed hip dysplasia.
In those early days, Tank moved slowly and had difficulty getting onto the couch.
Today, life looks very different.
With continued weight management, veterinary care, and plenty of love, Tank is down to approximately 110 pounds. He runs, jumps, and climbs into the car with an enthusiasm his family never imagined when they first brought him home.
And that couch he once struggled to reach?
It's now one of his favorite places to be, preferably with someone close enough to cuddle.
A Life Full of Joy
Tank has embraced every part of his new life.
He loves car rides, camping trips, and spending time at the family cabin. On pontoon rides, he settles in comfortably, content to enjoy the journey. He's also formed a close friendship with Harley, the family's eight-year-old black Lab.
But what makes Tank especially memorable is his affection.
He wants to be near his people, whether that means stretching across someone's lap, sneaking in a quick kiss, or simply being close.
Vicki shared one particularly endearing habit: even when Tank is sleeping with his eyes closed, his tail begins wagging when he hears someone approaching.
It's as though he can't contain his happiness at knowing his people are nearby.
“Fate brought us together.”

The Gift of a Second Chance
When asked what they would want HMAS staff and volunteers to know, Vicki and Jeff became emotional.
They wanted to thank everyone who cared for Tank, showed him patience, and gave him the time he needed until his family came along.
Most of all, they wanted them to know how much he is loved.
Tank's journey is a reminder that a shelter stay doesn't define an animal's future. Sometimes, a dog who has waited months for a home is simply waiting for the right people to find him.
And sometimes, those people aren't even looking.
As Vicki reflected on the unexpected Facebook post that brought Tank into their lives, she returned to one word: fate.
"I just think it was fate that brought us together," she said.
For Vicki, Jeff, and Tank, it's hard to imagine a happier ending.
