Delightful Derek: A Second Chance That Changed Two Lives
Sometimes, the animals who need a little extra care have the most extraordinary love to give.

When Katie first met Bing at Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter, she wasn't looking to adopt another cat.
Her family already had two cats, and they'd originally visited HMAS to help her in-laws find their own feline companions.
But Lisa, who knew the shelter's animals well, had someone else in mind. She thought Bing might be the perfect fit for Katie's family.
What began as a visit to help someone else find a companion would eventually lead Katie to a cat who would change her own life.
A Second Chance Begins with Care
Bing had known one home for his entire life.
He had been with his owner since he was a kitten. But when his owner passed away, Bing lost the person and home he'd always known.
In December 2025, he arrived at Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter, facing not only the uncertainty of a new environment but also a painful medical condition. Bing had entropion, a condition that causes the eyelids to turn inward, irritating the surface of the eyes. He struggled to see comfortably and often kept his eyes partially closed.
Yet despite everything he'd been through, Bing remained remarkably gentle and affectionate. He welcomed soft pets, enjoyed the occasional tasty treat, and trusted the people around him.
HMAS arranged corrective eyelid surgery to relieve the irritation and help him see more comfortably.
The difference was remarkable.
As his eyes healed, Bing could finally see better. The irritation subsided, and Lisa watched him blossom, becoming more outgoing and actively seeking attention.
His medical condition had never defined his personality. But getting the care he needed allowed even more of that personality to shine.
Bing had lost the home he'd known his entire life. But with the care he needed, he was ready for another chance at being loved.
And soon, someone would see just how special he was.
A Cat Worth Coming Back For
Bing was recovering from eye problems that had affected his appearance. His squinty eyes gave him the look of a sleepy old man, but Katie found them endearing. And once she met him, his personality made an even bigger impression.
He immediately rubbed against the family, welcomed their affection, and even allowed Katie's youngest child to pick him up.
He was gentle, affectionate, and remarkably calm.
Katie calls him a "unicorn cat."
Still, she hesitated. Her family already had two cats, their dog was facing serious health problems, and Bing's eyes may require additional medical care. She also wanted to give another family the opportunity to adopt him.
But after leaving the shelter, she couldn't stop thinking about him.
"We missed him immediately," Katie recalls. "We just felt like he belonged to us."
Eventually, the family welcomed Bing home and gave him a new name: Delightful Derek.
And he quickly proved just how fitting that name would be.
Finding His Place
Derek settled into family life remarkably well. He initially spent time hiding beneath the beds, but before long, he was coming when called, cuddling with the family's other cats, and confidently claiming his place in the household.
Today, he's the calm center of a busy home.
He greets visitors, patiently accepts affection from the children, and has a charming habit of politely begging for food by placing one paw on someone's leg while lifting the other into the air.
But perhaps his most endearing quality is how he cares for other cats.
When the family welcomed a new kitten named Waffles, Derek immediately took him under his wing. The two are now inseparable.
Katie says Derek also watches over foster kittens who visit the home, making sure they're safe and stepping in when the other cats play too roughly.
The cat who once needed extra care has become a gentle protector himself.
More Than a Second Chance
Derek did eventually need another eye surgery after adoption. He recovered well and is now thriving in the home where he is so deeply loved.
But the most meaningful part of his story isn't simply that he found a family.
It's what he has given them in return.
When someone has a difficult day, Derek is the cat they turn to for comfort. His gentle presence brings a sense of calm to the entire household.
And for Katie, the connection is especially profound.
“For me Derek has really healed something in my soul.”
— Katie, Derek's adopter
She calls him her soul cat.
